How shippers cut dwell time at busy docks

Most dwell problems start before the truck reaches the gate. Teams that trim detention usually fix three things first: appointment quality, document readiness, and escalation timing.

A clear waybill helps. Assign one owner for each load and capture origin, destination, PRO number, and ETA in a single format that dispatch, warehouse, and consignee teams all read the same way.

When delays hit, escalate by clock time, not by feeling. If a load misses first contact by 15 minutes, route it to the backup contact list. If dock queue exceeds 60 minutes, trigger a revised ETA and notify the receiving team immediately.
